Overview

Sleep is an indispensable part of our lives. A poor sleep experience impacts our cognitive, physical, behavioral, and lifestyle functions. While sleep impacts both our body and mind functioning it is still undervalued in terms of pillars of health and not prioritized in today’s world of competing priorities. Sleep is impacted by our environment, the products that we use, and our lifestyle habits. Today, even though we are flooded with product sand experiences that promise to better our sleep, most people do not have a desirable sleeping experience. This project  brings together the stories and desires of people to uncover their ideal sleeping experience.

Project Background

Our objective with this research is to understand the relationship people share with sleep. We do this by giving them a blank canvas to paint their feelings and desires. Their emotional
stories give us a peek into their lives and what truly matters to them when it comes to a desirable sleep. What came clear to us through this research is that sleep is a very personal
experience and so are the challenges that it brings. However,
there are a number of common themes and patterns that they share when it comes to their futuristic sleeping experience.

Stakeholders

To pursue our objective, we conducted a research study in a span of four weeks with a total of 72 participants aged between 20 to 50 years in the US.  We also interviewed one sleep expert and two sleep doctors to have an expert viewpoint. They also became the voice of hundreds of people who they work with closely.

Research Methods

The research was a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods, to reveal the emotional insights, the needs, challenges, and aspirations that people associate with their ideal sleep. For quantitative research we conducted surveys, that helped us understand the high-frequency pain points and aspirations. These were used as “anchors” to build our other research activities. For qualitative research, we conducted an hour-long, one on one interview, a cultural probe, and four individual workshops with single participants to understand their sensory needs and attributes.

Research Guide

To better grasp the thoughts, feelings, and aspirations of our users, we developed discussion guides and surveys activities specifically for our key stakeholders: sleep specialists and core users. These questions were based on the below key theme of closed, open, brain, heart, problem and future based.

The survey questions gave us quantitative data.

Insight: Value Framework

After synthesizing our research data into actionable insights, we arrived at 15 key values with relaxation being the key, that factor into their aspirations for the future of their sleep. Our framework is a synthesized visual representation of these values and each chapter of this book takes you into the magical world of high-frequency wishful desires.

We translated our research, user insights, and methodology into "The Client Book," a comprehensive yet simple user manual. It includes examination of user stories, difficulties, wants, and unedited human data.
